The Monk build uses Dodge Chance as both my main defense and one of my strongest damage stats. In Nightmare and Inferno, boss damage can quickly outscale normal Health and Armor, so I build around Dodge Chance, Critical Strike Damage, Furious Fist, and the Hundred Hands rune set.
How the Monk Build Works
Formless and Dodge Chance
Formless is the main talent behind my damage scaling. It gives me bonus Critical Strike Damage equal to my total Dodge Chance percentage.
This means every extra point of Dodge Chance also increases my Critical Strike Damage.
Zephyr’s Flow and Mana
I use Zephyr’s Flow to keep my mana up. Every successful dodge restores mana, so I can continuously use my abilities while fighting.
Mirror Steps and Physical Damage
I use Mirror Steps to add flat Physical Damage after every dodge. Since I am fighting in melee and dodging regularly, I can keep this bonus active almost all the time.
Hundred Hands
I use all 6 pieces of Hundred Hands because it gives my Basic Attacks most of their damage scaling.
- 2 pieces: +100% Basic Attack Damage.
- 4 pieces: +3% Physical Damage for every Furious Fist stack, up to +60%.
- 6 pieces: 25% chance to automatically trigger Golden Palms for free when I use Furious Fist.
This makes Furious Fist the main attack I use throughout the build.
Combat Talents
I have exactly 60 talent points at Level 60, so I cannot max every talent. I spend the points in a specific order to reach Mirror Steps, Zephyr’s Flow, and the final Formless capstone without delaying them.
Talent Tree Rules
- I need 5 points to unlock Row 5, then 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 for the later rows.
- Rows 10, 30, and 60 have mutually exclusive capstones.
- At Level 60, I take Formless and cannot combine it with Iron Constitution.
- I do not spend 8 points in Dodge and 10 points in Physical Damage early on Row 1. This delays Mirror Steps and Zephyr’s Flow.
- MonkTalent35 and MonkTalent40 do not exist in the CSV data. These are internal gaps from talents removed before launch.
Level 1 to 5
I spend my first 5 points in Dodge Chance (5/8).
This gives me the points I need to unlock the next tier.
Level 6 to 10
I reach 10 points and unlock Capstone I.
I take Attack Speed (4/6) and then put 1 more point into Dodge Chance, bringing it to 6/8.
Level 11
I take Mirror Steps (1/1 – MAX).
Every dodge now adds flat Physical Damage. I can keep this active almost permanently while fighting in melee.
Level 12 to 15
I reach 15 points and finish:
- Dodge Chance (8/8 – MAX)
- Attack Speed (6/6 – MAX)
Level 16 to 20
I take Zephyr’s Flow (5/5 – MAX).
Every dodge generates mana, which gives me the resource sustain I need.
Level 21 to 29
I spend the next 9 points in Fundamentals (9/10).
This increases the damage of my Basic Attack skills.
Level 30
I reach 30 points and unlock Capstone II.
I take Gathered Force (1/1 – MAX).
My Basic Attacks store charges that empower my next Strong Attack.
Level 31 to 40
I finish Fundamentals (10/10 – MAX).
I also take:
- Vigor (8/8 – MAX)
- Heavy Hands (1/5)
Level 41 to 50
I take:
- Enhance Spirit Twin: Duration (6/6 – MAX)
- Slipstream (4/6)
Level 51 to 59
I take:
- Enhance Golden Palms: Damage & Mana Cost (8/8 – MAX)
- Exploit Weakness (1/10)
Level 60
I take Formless (1/1 – MAX).
This is the main talent of the build because it converts my Dodge Chance directly into Critical Strike Damage.
60-Point Check
My final setup uses exactly 60 points.
8 Dodge + 6 Attack Speed + 1 Mirror Steps + 5 Zephyr’s Flow + 8 Vigor + 10 Fundamentals + 1 Heavy Hands + 1 Gathered Force + 6 Spirit Twin Duration + 4 Slipstream + 8 Golden Palms + 1 Exploit Weakness + 1 Formless = 60 points.
Life Skills
The Life Skills tree gives me permanent account progression, so I focus on the upgrades that help me find items, earn gold, level faster, and reduce downtime.
Item Find / Magic Find
I take Item Find / Magic Find first.
This improves my drop quality and helps me collect the 6 pieces of the Hundred Hands rune set and farm Deflecting Handwraps.
Gold Find
I take Gold Find second.
I use the extra gold for carriage automation, crafting, and talent respecs.
XP Gain
I take XP Gain third.
This helps me reach Level 60 faster and also speeds up my Paragon progression.
Revive Cooldown
I take Decrease Auto Revive Cooldown I & II to reduce downtime during difficult progression.
Carriage Upgrades
I prioritize:
- Carriage Capacity
- Auto-Sell
- Auto Fill Inventory
These make my idle runs easier to manage.
Paragon System
Once I reach Level 60, I use Paragon points to increase my Dexterity, Critical Strike stats, Dodge Chance, Attack Speed, and sustain.
Core
I take Dexterity because it is my main Monk attribute and increases martial skill damage without a point cap.
I also take Movement Speed until I reach the +25% cap.
I use Max Health % to give me more protection against AoE attacks and unavoidable boss mechanics.
Offense
I prioritize Critical Strike Chance so I can make almost every Furious Fist hit critical.
I also take Critical Strike Damage because it increases the damage created by Formless.
I use Attack Speed to build my 20 Furious Fist stacks quickly.
Defense
Dodge Chance is my highest-priority defensive stat.
It protects me from incoming attacks while also increasing my Critical Strike Damage through Formless.
I take Magic Resist to help against elemental damage from late-game Inferno bosses.
I also take Physical Damage Reduction for attacks that get through my Dodge Chance.
Utility
I take Life on Hit because my high Attack Speed and 20 Furious Fist stacks let me restore Health very quickly.
I also take Item Find / Gold Find to improve my efficiency during offline and idle farming.
Non-Legendary Equipment
When I use Rare or Epic equipment, I follow these affix priorities.
| Slot | Affix Priority |
|---|---|
| Weapon | Flat Weapon Damage > Physical Damage % > Basic Attack Damage % > Critical Strike Damage % > Attack Speed % |
| Helmet | Dodge Chance % > Cooldown Reduction > Max Health % > Armor |
| Chest | Dodge Chance % > Physical Damage Reduction % > Max Health % > Magic Resist |
| Gloves | Critical Strike Chance % > Critical Strike Damage % > Attack Speed % > Dodge Chance % |
| Boots | Movement Speed % > Dodge Chance % > Max Health % > Magic Resist |
| Rings 1 & 2 | Critical Strike Chance % > Critical Strike Damage % > Dodge Chance % > Life on Hit |
| Amulet | Critical Strike Chance % > Critical Strike Damage % > Basic Attack Damage % > Dodge Chance % |
Legendary Equipment
Deflecting Handwraps
I use Deflecting Handwraps for my gloves.
Every Furious Fist stack gives me +1% Dodge Chance.
At 20 stacks, I gain +20% Dodge Chance, which also becomes Critical Strike Damage through Formless.
Evasive Cuirass
I use Evasive Cuirass for my chest.
It gives Physical Damage Reduction equal to 50% of my Dodge Chance.
With 70–80% Dodge Chance, this gives me 35–40% permanent Physical Damage Reduction.
Alternative: Unyielding Cuirass.
Visage of the Undying
I use Visage of the Undying for my helmet.
It reduces all damage taken by 25%.
Offensive alternative: Ring of Concentration, which gives +100% damage on my next Golden Palms.
Soulrender
I use Soulrender as my weapon.
It has a 25% chance to build Soul Harvest. At 25 stacks, it releases Soul Strike for 800% Physical Damage with an AoE stun.
With around 4 hits per second, I can trigger Soul Strike frequently and activate Exploit Weakness.
Alternative: The Grandmother with +5% Critical Strike Chance and +120% Critical Strike Damage.
Pendant of Vigor
I use Pendant of Vigor as my amulet.
It gives +75% total damage while Healthy, which means above 80% Health.
My Dodge Chance and Life on Hit help me stay near full Health and keep this bonus active.
Ring of Revelation
I use Ring of Revelation as my first ring.
Standing still gives me +10% Basic Attack Damage per second, stacking up to 20 times.
At maximum stacks, this gives me +200% additional damage to Furious Fist during static melee combat.
Charged Ring
I use Charged Ring as my second ring.
It gives up to +50% bonus damage based on my current Mana percentage.
Because Zephyr’s Flow keeps my mana full, I can maintain the full +50% bonus.
Boss alternative: Dragonslayer Ring with +35% Attack Speed.
Battle Draught Belt
I use Battle Draught Belt for burst damage.
Drinking a potion gives me +35% total damage for 6 seconds.
I use this window against stage and dungeon bosses.
Boots of the Windcaller
I use Boots of the Windcaller for movement speed.
After a kill, I gain +50% Movement Speed for 4 seconds.
Alternative: Healing Tread Boots, which restore 3% Max HP per second while moving.
Black Mist Gear
I use Black Mist Gear for my Pants, Shoulders, and Cloak.
It is a legendary crafting base with 7 revealable affixes in the Workshop.
I target:
- Dodge Chance %
- Physical Damage %
- Max Health %
- Magic Resist
Hundred Hands Rune Set
I use all 6 Hundred Hands rune slots because this set provides the main damage engine for the build.
- 2 pieces: +100% Basic Attack Damage.
- 4 pieces: +3% Physical Damage per Furious Fist stack, up to +60%.
- 6 pieces: 25% chance to automatically trigger Golden Palms for free when using Furious Fist.
I use Furious Fist to build my stacks and trigger the free Golden Palms activations.
Ring Rule
I cannot equip two identical rings with the same name.
I use Ring of Revelation + Charged Ring.
During boss fights, I can replace Charged Ring with Dragonslayer Ring.
Engine Hardcaps
I keep these limits in mind when choosing my stats.
| Stat | Engine Behavior | What I Do |
|---|---|---|
| Critical Strike Chance | 100% functional cap | I aim for 75–85% on gear and use combat buffs to reach 100%. |
| Dodge Chance | Linear / Uncapped for Formless | I continue stacking Dodge because every 1% also increases Critical Strike Damage. |
| Critical Strike Damage | No Cap | I continue stacking it because it multiplies my damage. |
| Attack Speed | Practical Diminishing Return | Once I build 20 Furious Fist stacks quickly, I focus more on Critical Damage, Physical Damage, or Dodge. |
| Movement Speed | +25% Paragon Cap | One boot affix of +15–20% is enough for smooth map movement. |
Best Companions
Early Game
Bloodmoon Werewolf
I use Bloodmoon Werewolf during early progression.
Its Bloodmoon Howl gives me a temporary Attack Speed boost, helping me reach 20 Furious Fist stacks quickly.
Big Treant
I use Big Treant when I need more sustain.
Its Healing Spirit restores a percentage of my Max Health, which is useful before I get Life on Hit from Paragon.
Mid Game
Ice Hound
I use Ice Hound for crowd control and shielding.
Its Capacitor Shell gives me an absorption shield that stuns nearby enemies when it breaks. This also activates Exploit Weakness.
Redrock Lord
I use Redrock Lord for additional Physical Damage.
Its Power of Redrock Lord gives me a flat Physical Damage boost for several seconds.
Late Game & Inferno
Cinder Lord
I use Cinder Lord for boss damage.
Its Wrath of Cinder gives me a large Critical Strike Damage multiplier, which works directly with Formless.
Flame Dragon / Glacial Dragon
I use these when I need more defensive consistency in Inferno.
- Flame Armor: Magic shield.
- Glacial Shard: Hard CC.
Active Skills
I use Furious Fist as my Basic Attack and Spirit Twin as my second Special. Hundred Hands then gives me free Golden Palms activations while I build Furious Fist stacks.
Furious Fist
I use Furious Fist (MonkBasicAttack2) as my Basic Attack.
It builds up to 20 momentum stacks and gives me rapid Attack Speed without costing mana.
Golden Palms
I use Golden Palms (MonkHeavyAttack4) as my Strong Attack.
Hundred Hands can also trigger it automatically and for free.
Wind Steps
I use Wind Steps (MonkSpecial5) as my first Special.
It gives me a large temporary Dodge Chance increase.
Spirit Twin
I use Spirit Twin (MonkSpecial4) as my second Special.
It summons a spirit double that mirrors my Basic and Strong Attacks in real time.
Hundred Hands
I use all 6 pieces of Hundred Hands for the Basic Attack damage, Furious Fist Physical Damage, and free Golden Palms activations.
Alternative Strong Attacks
I have 4 Strong Attack options for this slot.
- Sacred Judgment (MonkHeavyAttack1) — Heavy single-target holy lightning strike.
- Piercing Lunge (MonkHeavyAttack2) — Linear piercing thrust.
- Whirlwind Staff (MonkHeavyAttack3) — Wandering tornadoes that deal area damage.
Alternative Specials
I have 6 Special options for my 2 slots.
- Sacred Orbs (MonkSpecial1) — Orbiting holy lightning projectiles.
- Spirit Stream (MonkSpecial2) — Channels healing or a lightning pulse.
- Charge (MonkSpecial3) — Rushes forward and stuns enemies in an area.
- Divine Thunder (MonkSpecial6) — Creates a stationary lightning storm that inflicts Daze.
For the Hundred Hands build, I use Wind Steps + Spirit Twin because both directly support my Dodge Chance and attack cadence.
Monk Inferno Achievement
Difficulty does not stack between classes.
If I complete Inferno with a Sorcerer or Warrior, I do not unlock the Monk achievement.
INFERNO_MONK
I need to complete the maximum game difficulty specifically as the Monk.
The build uses Critical Dodge scaling, Hundred Hands, Life on Hit from Paragon, and a high-tier Companion for the Inferno progression.
