Probably Stolen Water Trading Guide

By Editorial / September 22, 2026 / Guides / 23 minutes of reading

In this guide, I cover the basic water trading system, water purity, mixing formulas, water sources, processing equipment, containers, buyers, and profit calculations. I also explain how I calculate the amount of water needed to reach a specific purity.

Probably Stolen All Events Guide

How to Trade Water in Probably Stolen

Water trading is one of the main ways I make money in Probably Stolen. I collect different types of water, improve their purity, mix them together, and sell them to different buyers.

My basic, entry-level water trading

Water trading is a very profitable venture with a relatively low cost to enter.

Entry-level version

I need the following items to get started:

ItemWhere to get it
Neon household items signJackson
Neon water signJackson
PitcherHousehold neon sign seller
Water filterHousehold neon sign seller
Water testing kitHousehold neon sign seller

I can get everything from the sources listed above.

Alternatively, I can buy Water Trading from Wild’s upgrades. This gives me everything except the household neon sign for 300 Wild’s favour. It also unlocks the entirety of the water trading content.

The basics of water trading

I put a water neon sign into the display case. This converts one random customer into a water seller.

I buy any water above rustwater quality from them. Some traders can try to mislabel their water, so I use a water testing strip on any discoloured water I find.

I then unpackage water rations or pour water from bought containers into the pitcher with the water filter equipped.

I test the water with water testing kits to see what quality I received and label it accordingly.

The most optimal selling strategy

I fill a water container with any amount of any quality water, relabel it as pure water, and put it into the display case.

This attracts the upper-level water stockpiler, who has the highest budget. He will only buy high-quality to pure water quality.

Selling to him improves my standing with upper-levels. Eventually, this allows me to get the 20 rep perk, which adds an additional +15% to trading with upper-levels.

This also applies to the water stockpiler, so my water trading profits increase as well.

Example profits

Buying 2000ml of basewater costs 80 credits.

After filtering, I get around 1975ml of high-quality water. The missing volume is the contaminants removed during filtering.

Selling this to the water stockpiler, or another customer with enough budget, gives me 118 credits without any price modifiers.

With retail markup and tipping from the upper-level 20 rep perk, I get 153 credits.

So after spending 80 credits, I can gain 153 credits.

This gives me a 91.25% return on investment, not counting the cost of replacing used filters.

Water deficit events can increase these profits even further.

This is only the basic version of the water business. The advanced methods are covered further below.

Water buyers

There are two main types of water buyers.

BuyerBuysWater testingSpring waterReferred as
Lower-level buyerBasewater – high-quality water and water rationsAlways testsNoLL
Upper-level buyerGutterflow – pure water and water rationsNever testsYesUL

The following customers are exceptions.

LL ScavT1 display case water buyerDoes not test their water
LL Pale scavRandom customerDoes not test their water and also buys pure water
LL Thirsty spacerT1 display case water buyerAlso buys ghostwater
LL SpacerWater supply crisis eventAlso buys ghostwater

UL Upper-level water stockpilerT3 display case water buyerAlways tests, does not buy water rations, and only buys high-quality – pure water

Any customer not mentioned above follows the normal buyer rules.

Water types

Every 25ml of water is worth 1 credit.

Only multiples of 25 matter. For example, 24,999ml is still worth 0 credits.

The water value is then modified by its label. This becomes the new base value.

Water typeQualityPrice modifierWine quality
Pure water99.9+%+100%+1
High-quality99%-99.9%+50%+1
Basewater98%-99%+0%+0
Ghostwater96%-98%-33%-1
Rustwater90%-96%-75%-2
Gutterflow<90%-90%-3

Rustwater and gutterflow can be distinguished without strip tests. Do not try to scam with them.

Gutterflow is further divided into unknown water below 35% water concentration. There is no separate label for it, so it uses the gutterflow label and is mechanically identical to gutterflow.

Source water and water randomization

I refer to any place that provides water containing all 6 contaminants and water as source water.

For example, water from a rustwater tap is source rustwater.

Water from processing source rustwater is not source ghostwater. It is processed ghostwater, because only chemicals and heavy metals remain.

Why source water matters

Source water can be improved further through its processing line because there are still contaminants that can be removed.

I can also predict the composition of source water because it follows specific water randomization patterns.

Water randomization patterns

Each source water always has the quality dictated by its source, but the exact percentage varies within that quality range.

For example, source basewater will always produce water between 98% and 98.99% quality.

The exact chemical makeup follows one of two randomization patterns.

PatternHeavy metalsOrganic wasteMicrobesChemical contaminantsPhysical contaminantMinerals
Pattern 1122.5211.5
Pattern 21.522211.5

These are the ratios between contaminants.

For example, I have source basewater at 98% quality. This means I have 2% contaminants.

I divide 2% by 10, because there are 10 total parts in the ratio. This gives me 0.2% per part.

If the source uses Pattern 1, the chemical makeup is:

  • 0.2% heavy metals
  • 0.4% organic waste
  • 0.5% microbes
  • 0.4% chemical contaminants
  • 0.2% physical contaminant
  • 0.3% minerals

The contaminants always follow one of these randomization patterns.

I will not suddenly get almost no heavy metals and chemicals while having a large amount of microbes. If the ratios do not follow one of these patterns, the water is not actual source water.

Water sources

Sources of source water are bolded below.

For an explanation of Pattern 1 and Pattern 2, I can refer back to the water randomization section.

Pure water

  • Moisture farm (+150% quality, uses Pattern 2)
  • Animal feces conversion

High-quality

  • Ice miner event customers (uses Pattern 1)
  • Moisture farm (+100% quality, uses Pattern 1)

Basewater

  • Water ration (uses Pattern 2)
  • Small water ration (uses Pattern 2)
  • Moisture farm (+50% quality, uses Pattern 2)
  • Customers selling water (uses Pattern 2)
  • HydraTech micro purifier

Ghostwater

  • Customers selling water (uses Pattern 1)
  • Moisture farm (+0% quality, uses Pattern 1)

Rustwater

  • Moisture farm (-50% quality, uses Pattern 2)
  • Rustwater tap (exception: varies between 90-92% instead of 90-96%, uses Pattern 1)
  • Customers selling water (uses Pattern 1)

Gutterflow

  • Moisture farm (-100% quality, uses Pattern 1)
  • Gutterflow tap (exception: varies between 80-89% instead of 35-89.99%, uses Pattern 1)
  • Wine (uses Pattern 2; technically source basewater with 150ml alcohol and 0-15ml wine extract depending on quality)
  • Contraband wine (uses Pattern 2; technically source basewater with 150ml alcohol, 6ml wine extract and 6ml chemical contaminants)
  • Nudka (uses Pattern 2; technically source basewater with 337.5ml alcohol)

Unknown water

  • Animal feces, which can be used to make 100% pure water
  • All chemicals from chemical kits
  • Dream dust
  • Phanta pill
  • Birth control pill
  • Zyanide pill
  • Caffeine pill
  • Nutrient tablets

Water processing

I first use a water testing strip or AquaScan to determine the starting water quality.

I then follow the processing steps for that quality.

Processing water that has already been processed will not work because its relevant contaminants have already been removed.

Note: If I use the HydraTech purifier on any water, it turns it into source basewater. I then follow the basewater process instead of the process for its previous quality.

High-quality water processing

This turns high-quality water into either higher-percentage high-quality water or pure water.

  • 74.16% chance: higher-percentage high-quality water
  • 25.84% chance: pure water

Shopping list

  • Pitcher
  • Water filter
  • UV Light (optional)
  • Water strip tests or AquaScan

If I have a UV light, I use it directly on the water container.

I then pour the water into the pitcher with the water filter equipped.

I use water strip tests or AquaScan to confirm whether I received pure water or simply increased the purity of my high-quality water.

Basewater processing

This turns basewater into high-quality water with a 100% chance.

Shopping list

  • Pitcher
  • Water filter
  • UV Light (optional)

If I have a UV light, I use it directly on the water container.

I can also use purification tablets instead to reduce filter durability usage. However, selling the tablets and buying more filters is more profitable.

I then pour the water into the pitcher with the filter.

This process has a 100% chance to produce high-quality water, so I do not need to test it.

I manually relabel it as high-quality using the red labeller.

Ghostwater processing

This turns ghostwater into:

  • 75% chance: high-quality water
  • 25% chance: high-percentage basewater

Shopping list

  • UV Light or purification tablets
  • Pitcher
  • Water filter
  • Water strip tests or AquaScan

I put all my ghostwater into one container.

I then use UV on it or put purification tablets inside.

If I use tablets, I make sure there is at least 15ml of free space in the container.

I pour the water through a water filter inside a pitcher.

At the end, I test the water with a water testing kit or AquaScan to confirm whether I received high-quality water or basewater.

Rustwater processing

This turns rustwater into ghostwater with a 100% chance.

Shopping list

  • UV Light or purification tablets
  • Pitcher
  • Water filter

OR

  • HydraTech purifier

If I use the HydraTech purifier, I start from the basewater processing method.

I put all my rustwater into one container.

I use UV on it or put purification tablets inside.

If I use tablets, I make sure there is at least 15ml of free space in the container.

I then pour it into the pitcher with the filter.

This always produces ghostwater, so I do not need to test it.

I manually relabel it as ghostwater using the red labeller.

Gutterflow processing

Gutterflow can turn into either gutterflow or rustwater. The chances depend on the source.

I do not recommend processing gutterflow this way.

Instead, I use the HydraTech purifier and start from the basewater processing method.

Water purification equipment overview

Kotton fabric

Kotton fabric is used in the pitcher and has 1000 durability.

ContaminantRemoval
Plant matter1ml / 2 durability
Insoluble debris1ml / 2 durability

This is the most cost-effective way to remove these contaminants.

I can buy it from the material neon sign scav seller.

Water filter

The water filter is used in the pitcher and has 400 durability.

There is also an advanced version with an additional passive that restores 50 durability per day.

ContaminantRemoval
Plant matter1ml / 2 durability
Insoluble debris1ml / 2 durability
Microplastics1.5ml / 2 durability
Physical contaminant1.5ml / 2 durability
Organic matter1ml / 1 durability
Minerals2ml / 1 durability
Microbes1ml / 2 durability

I can buy it from the household neon sign scav seller.

Water purification tablets

Water purification tablets contain 15ml of chlorine.

I need at least 1ul of water in the container for them to work.

Each 1ml of chlorine removes:

  • 500ml of microbes
  • Up to 200ml of chemical contaminants

The tablet can remove any amount of microbes with one tablet. The 15ml of chlorine can remove 7.5l of microbes.

It can also remove chemical contaminants above 1.5% concentration. The concentration is checked with the 15ml of chlorine present, so the actual percentage can be something like 1.54%.

Warning: Putting tablets into a full bottle will void some water. I leave at least 15ml of free capacity if I want to avoid this.

I can buy purification tablets from the household neon sign scav seller.

UV light

The UV light can be used directly on a water container or in a pitcher.

It converts the entire volume of microbes into water.

For example, 10ml of microbes becomes 10ml of additional water.

I use UV light first if I also intend to use a water filter or purification tablets.

I can buy it from Dr. Jackson.

HydraTech micro water purifier

The HydraTech micro water purifier has 400 durability.

It adjusts the percentages of contaminants already present in a chosen water container until the water reaches 98.00% water concentration, while keeping the contaminant ratios the same.

It creates water if needed.

It only works on water below 98% water concentration.

I can buy an unused one from normal thieves or a used one from Dr. Jackson.

Water strip tests

Water strip tests come in a water testing kit containing 10 tests.

They are single-use.

They check the concentration of water in a chosen water container.

I can buy them from the household neon sign scav seller.

AquaScan

AquaScan is reusable.

It checks:

  • Water concentration
  • Water volume
  • All contaminants in the chosen water container

I can buy it from the household neon sign thief seller or Dr. Jackson.

Module impact

N/A. No modules can be inserted.

Moisture farm

The moisture farm produces source water and requires a water container to work.

The base rate is 1000ml of ghostwater for 4 energy/day.

Module impact

Quality

Every 50% quality improves or worsens the quality of water produced.

Only multiples of 50 matter. For example, 49% quality still produces ghostwater.

Performance

Every 1% performance increases or decreases the volume of water produced by 10ml.

Efficiency

Every 25% efficiency increases or decreases the energy requirement by 1 energy.

Only multiples of 25 matter. 24% efficiency still requires 4 energy/day.

Notable quality cut-offs

0%

After basic filtering in a pitcher:

  • 25% chance: basewater
  • 75% chance: high-quality

If I use UV before filtering:

  • 24% chance: basewater
  • 76% chance: high-quality

Pooling all water from the moisture farm into one container over 5 days will almost always result in 5 days’ worth of high-quality water because the basewater I might get is very high percentage.

The amount produced after filtering is:

  • 972-986ml
  • 982-991ml with UV before the pitcher

50%

After basic filtering in a pitcher, the result is always high-quality water.

The amount produced after filtering is:

  • 993-996.5ml
  • 995.5-997.75ml with UV before the pitcher

100%

After basic filtering:

  • 74.16% chance: high-quality water with a higher percentage
  • 25.83% chance: pure water

With UV before filtering:

  • 74.13% chance: high-quality water with a higher percentage
  • 25.86% chance: pure water

The amount produced after filtering is:

  • 993-999.3ml
  • 995.5-999.55ml with UV before the pitcher

150%

There is no need to filter it. It will always result in pure water.

Water Purifier

The Water Purifier converts contaminants in a water bottle into water.

It can increase water quality beyond what is possible with normal methods.

I need at least 1ul of water for it to work.

The maximum base quality depends on the contaminants present in the water. Each contaminant has a maximum concentration it can reach. Once all contaminant types reach their concentration limit, the machine stops converting.

The base conversion rate per day depends on the total contaminant concentration and contaminant type.

These values are then modified by quality as described in the module impact section.

Organic waste0.10%
Microplastic0.18%
Microbe0.09%
Chemical contaminant0.16%
Physical contaminant0.07%
Mineral0.07%
Insoluble debris0.0%

Note: When the total contaminant concentration is above 50%, some contaminants can be purified below their normal minimum concentration. This usually happens when one contaminant has a very large volume while the others remain below the maximum amount that can be converted in the >50% concentration bracket.

Module impact

Quality

Quality indirectly changes the maximum water quality obtainable by lowering the minimum inconvertible concentration of contaminants.

QualityEffect
0%Base minimum concentration table
50%Divide by 3
75%Divide by 5
100%Divide by 12.5
200%Set minimum concentration to 0.0% for all types

Negative quality has no effect.

If I use source water, I need at least 100% quality to reach pure water.

If I pre-filter the water in a pitcher, I only need 75% quality.

Example

I have a purifier with 75% quality loaded with water containing heavy metals and chemical contaminants.

The minimum concentration is:

0.25 + 0.16 = 0.41

I divide this by 5:

0.41 / 5 = 0.0082

Then:

100 – 0.0082 = 99.918

So the maximum purity of this water is around 99.92%.

Performance

Every 1% performance adds or subtracts:

0.01 × [volume converted at >4% concentration bracket]

from each contaminant, regardless of the total contaminant concentration.

For example, with 102% performance and only chemical contaminants and heavy metals:

1.02 × 2ml + 1.02 × 3ml

= 2.04 + 3.06

= 5.1ml

So I remove an additional 5.1ml because of performance.

Efficiency

Every 20% efficiency increases or decreases the energy requirement by 1 energy.

Only multiples of 20 matter. 19% efficiency still requires 5 energy/day.

Water scamming

Who can I scam?

I can scam anyone who does not use a strip test:

  • Scavs
  • Tourists
  • Addicted upper-level water stockpiler

What can I use to scam?

I can use any clear water, which means ghostwater and better.

How do I scam?

I can label clear water as a higher quality than it actually is.

For example, I can label a bottle of ghostwater as basewater and sell it to a scav.

The scav pays the exact same price as if I sold genuine basewater.

Repercussions of scamming with ghostwater

Every 1ml of ghostwater I sell increases a hidden counter by:

Sold asCounter increase per ml
Pure water4
High-quality water2
Basewater1

Once the counter reaches at least 3000, I receive a new client endangerment charge in my criminal record.

The charge value is:

(Counter / 500) × 20 credits – 20 credits

The minimum charge is 100 credits:

3000 / 500 = 6

6 × 20 = 120

120 – 20 = 100 credits

Repercussions of scamming with basewater or high-quality water

Every 1ml sold increases a hidden counter by:

High-qualityPure water1.5

Once the counter reaches at least 3000, I receive a new criminal misrepresentation charge in my criminal record.

The charge is calculated using the same formula:

(Counter / 500) × 20 credits – 20 credits

The minimum charge is 100 credits.

Water taps

Gutterflow tap

  • Costs 250 Wild’s favour
  • Provides an unlimited source of source gutterflow
  • Water randomization is rolled at the start of the day
  • Every container filled from the tap on that day has the same quality
  • Uses Pattern 1
  • Quality varies between 80% and 89%

Possible profitable uses

I can use the HydraTech micro purifier to turn unlimited amounts of source gutterflow into source basewater, as long as HydraTech has enough durability.

I can also use it in winemaking with synthetic wine, because contraband wine does not care about water quality.

I can also sell unlimited amounts of water labelled as gutterflow to the merchant who buys everything except contraband, the addicted upper-level stockpiler, and tourists, as long as I have enough containers.

Rustwater tap

  • Costs 350 Wild’s favour
  • Costs 600 total, because I need the gutterflow tap first
  • Provides an unlimited source of source rustwater
  • Water randomization is rolled at the start of the day
  • Every container filled from the tap on that day has the same quality
  • Uses Pattern 1
  • Quality varies between 90% and 92%

Possible profitable uses

I can use the same methods listed for the gutterflow tap.

I can also purify it in a pitcher to get ghostwater for scamming:

  • Scavs
  • Tourists
  • Addicted upper-level stockpilers

I can purify it in a pitcher to get ghostwater for selling to:

  • Spacer
  • Thirsty spacer

I can also sell unlimited amounts of water labelled as rustwater to the merchant who buys everything except contraband, the addicted upper-level stockpiler, and tourists, as long as I have enough containers.

Another option is using it in a Water Purifier to produce higher-quality water.

How to perfectly measure certain water volumes

There are many ways to reach specific water volumes. These methods use the shortest number of steps.

1000ml

  1. I pour water into a 3l water pitcher.
  2. I pour it into a 2l bottle.
  3. The 3l pitcher is left with 1000ml.

250ml

  1. I pour water into a 3l pitcher.
  2. I pour it into a 2l bottle.
  3. I pour it into a 750ml bottle.
  4. The pitcher is left with 250ml.

150ml

  1. I pour water into a 450ml bottle.
  2. I pour it into a 750ml bottle.
  3. I pour water into a 450ml bottle.
  4. I pour it into the same 750ml bottle.
  5. The 450ml bottle is left with 150ml.

50ml

Using a 250ml chemical bottle

  1. I pour water into a 250ml chemical bottle.
  2. I pour it into a 450ml bottle.
  3. I pour water into the 250ml chemical bottle.
  4. I pour it into the same 450ml bottle.
  5. The 250ml bottle is left with 50ml.

Using a 150ml bottle

  1. I pour water into a 150ml bottle.
  2. I pour it into a 250ml bottle.
  3. I pour water into the 150ml bottle.
  4. I pour it into the same 250ml bottle.
  5. The 150ml bottle is left with 50ml.

Without chemical bottles

  1. I pour water into a 2l bottle.
  2. I pour it into a 750ml bottle.
  3. I pour it into another 750ml bottle.
  4. I pour it into a 450ml bottle.
  5. The 2l bottle is left with 50ml.

Water dilution

I can increase my profits by diluting small amounts of lower-quality water with larger amounts of higher-quality water.

For example, mixing 450ml of 97.4% ghostwater from rustwater processing with 2000ml of 99.4% high-quality water gives me 2450ml of 99.03% high-quality water.

This lets me turn mostly unwanted ghostwater into additional profit.

I need:

  • Water strip tests or AquaScan
  • Two quantities of water I want to mix

I first measure the quality of both quantities.

I then divide each quality by 100 and remove the percentage sign.

For example:

99.4% → 0.994

I multiply these numbers by their respective volumes:

0.974 × 450 = 438.3

0.994 × 2000 = 1988

I then add the results:

1988 + 438.3 = 2426.3

I divide this by the total volume:

2000 + 450 = 2450ml

2426.3 / 2450 = 0.9903

I multiply the result by 100 and add the percentage sign back:

0.9903 × 100 = 99.03%

The resulting water is therefore high-quality water.

Dilution equation

I can also use the equation below to find any missing value.

I can have a maximum of 1 unknown.

For example, I can calculate how much 80% water I can mix with 99% water while still getting 90% water.

  • y1 = volume of the first water
  • x1 = quality of the first water divided by 100 with % removed
  • y2 = volume of the second water
  • x2 = quality of the second water divided by 100 with % removed
  • x3 = final quality divided by 100 with % removed

Alternatively, I can use the tool written by @Shrimpeko from the Probably Stolen Discord to calculate this automatically.

I copy and paste the code into the Programiz C# online compiler and click Run.

Use dots for decimal points.

spare water means the lower-quality water I want to dilute my higher-quality water with.

Water Mixing Formula

  1. I choose the amount of water I want to mix.
  2. I enter the purity of the water I have.
  3. I enter the purity of the spare water.
  4. I enter the target purity I want to reach.
  5. I use the formula to calculate how much spare water I need to add.
  6. I round the result up to the nearest 50 ml.

For example, if the calculation gives me 320 ml, I use 350 ml because the game uses 50 ml steps.

The basic formula is:

Required Water = ((Water Volume × Water Purity ÷ Target Purity) − Water Volume) × Target Purity ÷ (Target Purity − Spare Water Purity)

The game also gives me these simple volume combinations:

FormulaCalculationResult
Formula 12,000 − 750 × 2 − 45050 ml
Formula 23,000 − 2,000 − 450 × 2100 ml
Formula 3750 × 2 − 450 × 3150 ml
Formula 42,000 − 450 × 4200 ml
Formula 53,000 − 2,000 − 750250 ml
Formula 6750 − 450300 ml
Formula 72,000 − 750 − 450 × 2350 ml
Formula 8Formula 1 + Formula 7400 ml

I use these combinations to reach the required water volume when mixing different water types.

100% pure water production

I can produce small amounts of 100% quality water by processing animal feces.

It is not very profitable by itself, but I can use it with dilution to turn high-quality water into more pure water or turn unwanted ghostwater into basewater.

I use the following process:

  1. I fill a water bottle with animal feces. Multiples of 300ml are best to work with.
  2. I use the HydraTech micro purifier to turn it into basewater.
  3. I use UV light to convert microbes into water.
  4. I optionally put Kotton fabric into a pitcher because it is more cost-effective and this is one of the few useful situations for it as a filter.
  5. I optionally pour the water in and out of the pitcher until the insoluble debris is gone.
  6. I put a water filter into the pitcher.
  7. I pour the water in and out of the pitcher until all contaminants are gone.

This results in 100% quality pure water.

The pictured yield from 300ml of rat feces is shown below.

How do I remove heavy metal and chemical contaminants?

There are 3 routes.

Two are direct and one is indirect.

The indirect method is to leave the heavy metals and chemicals in the water and dilute it with higher-quality water.

I cover this method in the Water dilution section.

The first direct method is to put the water into a Water Purifier and let it process.

The machine can only purify the water to a certain threshold, which I cover in the Water business machinery section.

Rat feces filtration

Shopping list

  • HydraTech micro purifier
  • Kotton fabric (optional)

I can use rat feces to increase the removal rate of heavy metals and chemical contaminants.

I use the following steps:

  1. I take any volume of water of any quality. The bigger the volume and the lower the concentration, the more rat feces I need.
  2. I pour out some water to leave room for the rat feces.
  3. I add rat feces. Even a single dropping increases the removal rate of heavy metals and chemical contaminants.
  4. I use the HydraTech micro purifier on the water.
  5. I use UV light on the water.
  6. I optionally filter it through a pitcher with Kotton fabric until the insoluble debris is gone.
  7. I filter it through a pitcher with water filters until everything except heavy metals and chemical contaminants is gone.
